Piggy Bank

Our piggy bank is a popular activity in our discovery center. This is a fun counting activity and easy enough to do at home.  You need a bank, pennies or lots of coins and some dice.

For younger children, roll one dice and have them put the correct amount of pennies in the bank (it's a small motor activity, too).  For older preschoolers, roll two dice counting up to twelve.

Grade school children?  Have them join the fun. They can subtract or multiply the two numbers and use a variety of coins to create their answer.

Earth Day and Art Show

This Saturday celebrate Earth Day at Forest Park Nature Center.  Food, music, face painting, crafts and lots of 'green' information for you and your family.  The celebrations will be held from 11 a.m. - 4 pm. Need more information?

I love it when I see events are FREE!  There is an art show at the Civic Center Plaza building.  Fifteen Peoria area artists are exhibiting works in a variety of mediums.  The show only runs through April.  Hours are 2-8 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.  Our MWF classes have really enjoyed their art experiences. This would be a wonderful opportunity to explore the arts with your child.  I have not seen the exhibit yet so you might want to call ahead to make sure it is age appropriate.  For more info

CUC Easter Egg Hunt

The CUC Easter Egg Hunt is tomorrow.  Our preschoolers filled 4,238 eggs!!! Seriously! We had a lot of fun counting to one hundred.  Try counting to one hundred with your child!  Count pennies or cereal.  Make counting fun!

Our Spring Garden

Our 3 y/o colored short strips of wallpaper green and then snipped for grass. The MWF classes traced leaf patterns on green wallpaper and cut leaves.

We have lots of stencils in our art center including butterflies!

We were given lots and lots of Birds and Blooms magazines. I tore out pages with birds and the children cut around the birds to add to our tree.  They are not done yet.  They keep adding birds, flowers and butterflies. It is a beautiful spring garden!

Lots and Lots of Easter Eggs

We provide lots and lots of opportunities for the children to use scissors.  For Easter, our bulletin board has a huge but empty Easter basket.   We have eggs for cutting in the art center. More wallpaper! The TTh 3 y/o class has a basket of traced eggs.  They just have to cut the egg out. The MWF 4 & 5 y/o class have egg patterns and wallpaper.  They have to trace and cut.

Easter Egg Counting

We reuse wallpaper in lots and lots fun ways at MCP!  To reinforce counting and number recognition, we cut wallpaper in small basket shapes (I just fold the paper in half and free hand a basket shape).  Numbers are written on each basket and there is a small bag of eggs (cut from paper scraps) for the children to glue. It is important your child can count orally and accurately count out items. Hop to it and get counting!

Bunny Bags

This is too cute not to share!  This is a child's hand print.  We printed the children's hands on white gift bags for our school Easter egg hunt.  You could do this for Grandma or Aunt Betty's hostess gift bag  for Easter dinner or if you have loads of time and energy it would be a cute Easter card (card stock is easily found in most super centers and craft stores).

Use brown acrylic or tempera paint. Paint your child's palm and fingers (EXCLUDING THE THUMB) and print on paper.  Let dry.  Use the pointer finger to paint in pink ears (have your child start at the top and pull the paint down), a pink dot  for the nose and two black dots for the eyes.  After the facial features dry, use a sharpie marker to add mouth and whiskers.  Hippity hop to it!  It's easy!

All Your Eggs in One Basket

This is a fun activity for number and letter recognition.  If you would like to make some for home, it's cheap and easy. You need some plastic Easter eggs and a Sharpie marker.

For numbers-put the number on one section of the egg and draw black dots on the other half. We have numbers 1-12.

For the letters-put the upper case
letter on one section and the lower
case letter on the other.

Hippity Hop!

Easter Bunny Jars

The Easter Bunny jars the kids created turned out pretty cute.  One thing I will do next year is have the kids take a pink marker and color a little pink on the ears.
