Masterpiece Monday---K is for Kandinsky

We are jazzed up about the artist, Wassily Kandinsky.  We are learning the names of musical instruments (piano, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, clarinet, drums and bass).  We watched the Basie Boogie with the legendary Count Basie and his band.

We are working with crayons and paper before we paint on canvas.  The children were instructed to choose colors and place their colors next to each other.
When we listen to music, we can 'hear' colors!

After the paper was colored, the children added black lines.  Straight or curvy?

More next Monday!

Key to Fun

We love using a lots of common objects at MCP.  Keys provide a lot of open ended opportunities for exploration.  Students can count, sort and create patterns.

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.  It turns what we have into enough, and more.  It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity.  It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.  Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Personal Pizzas

We are finished with our pizza unit.  It was a busy week and we did not get everything accomplished but here are the highlights:

Construction paper and glue make some pretty yummy personal pan pizzas!

What's your child's favorite pizza?  Look at the chart below and talk about and compare the numbers. We were not able to graph if we liked or did not like the pizza snack.  Here is an easy pizza recipe---

Masterpiece Monday---Kandinsky

Today we learned a little bit more about Wassily Kandinsky.  We looked at some of his early work and could see things like people and buildings. We noticed bright colors. We showed Kandinsky's later works and introduced the word abstract.

For the past few class periods, we have been listening to jazz during center time. The afternoon class watched Dizzy Gillespie---And Then She Stopped (we had connection problems in the morning)

Inspired by music, we went to the tables. Jazz makes us want to move.

Black markers for straight lines and curvy lines---

Lots of glue!  Lots of shapes and lots of color! And lots of jazz playing while the children created!

Here are some finished pieces!  More Masterpiece Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Ice Cream 2015

Our science unit on liquids and solids focuses on two basic concepts:  liquids do not have a shape and temperature can change solids and liquids.  Ask your child about the bag of ice and the egg. It was a fun demonstration on how temperature can change solids and liquids.

On Friday, our special snack was ice cream.  Super easy recipe.  Super sweet and the texture is a little different than store bought.  Here's the recipe---

We also graphed our favorite ice cream and if we liked the ice cream.  Talk to your child about these graphs.  Talk about the numbers, greater, less and equal!

I SPY 2015 part 2

Today is the last day of our I SPY unit with our TTh 3 y/o class.  On Tuesday, we created our own giant I SPY on a large piece of cardboard.
The children were told to glue the large pictures next to another picture but they could not glue on top of a picture.  We started with lots of large magazine pictures and then added small pictures.

Check out the I SPY board in our hallway!

Our group craft was individual I SPY pictures that will be sent home today.
