MCP Haunted House

We started the beginning of October with a lonely house in the dark of night.

Now, there are spiders trying to get into the house, trick-or-treaters at the door and bats and ghosts flying through sky.

That's not all...monsters have invaded our garden bulletin board!

Happy Halloween!

Our Favorite Nocturnal Animal

Morning Class
Afternoon Class

What is your child's favorite nocturnal animal?  Ask!  These graphs help us introduce concepts like greater and less than, more, less, greatest, least, zero and equal.  We also write the number with our 'pointer pencil'.

We have a lot of Halloween fun planned for today!

We glued on eyes, ears, nose, hair, mouth and teeth today.  It's a big blue monster!

We made shape monsters today.  What shape did your child choose?

We have been having fun in our art center painting and gluing.
 Dot markers and orange paint...

 Gluing on spooky jack-o-lantern faces...

Spooky ghosts for the final touch!  BOO!

Big blue monster might be going away but we're not going anywhere!  More fun ahead in November and December!!!

Masterpiece Monday---Van Gogh's Sunflowers

Last Friday, we drew nocturnal animals.
Get out pencils and crayons.  Your child can draw a spider and an owl.

Today was Masterpiece Monday with Vincent Van Gogh.  We looked at some of his sketches.  We practiced sketching a sunflower on paper.

We sketched our sunflower on our canvas and next week we will paint.

Witchy Woman

Last year we adapted an idea from Pinterest for our preK students and we will be creating these wonderful witchy legs again this year because they turned out too cute!!!

Each student received an orange piece of construction paper.  They were instructed to glue the long green strips in the middle of the paper so it looked like the number 11.  The students created a pattern on the legs.  We found it best to give each student 4 or 5 pieces, have them glue and then give them more.  We like to give the children choices---we had yellow, blue, brown and purples strips for the stockings.

A little skirt and some pointy shoes and you have one cute Halloween craft!

We watched these two videos on bats.  They were short and we learned a lot about bats!

Van Gogh's Sunflowers

 Masterpiece Monday
On Monday, we looked at some of Van Gogh's work.  The children started sketching sunflowers.  We also looked closely at the silk sunflowers and noticed there were other colors on the petals.  We blended orange, brown and black.
On Monday, we will sketch sunflowers on our canvas and the following Monday will paint.

MCP Monsters 2015

Monsters, monsters and more monsters!  Our TTh 3 y/o friends are learning the difference between real and pretend.  We read Ed Emberly's Big Green Monster and made our own big green monster.  Snipping the hair made our monster's hair fuzzy.

We rewrote the story and made our monster big and blue.  We will type this story up and send home with your child soon. Some friends painted foam board blue.  We will add green eyes, a red nose, purple ears and a big pink mouth.  Check back for the finished monster.

2014 Big Orange Monster---

More monsters!  We are painting the children's hands to create a monster.  How to---

Grover and Elmo are funny monsters.  When we snip our red oval it's makes Elmo fuzzy!  We are getting really good at listening to teacher directions when we make a craft.

A monster song---

Last week, we had pumpkin muffins.  Did your child like the pumpkin muffins?

Eight Legged Freaks

Well, our MWF preK classes learned that spiders have eight legs and are not freaky at all!  We made spiders...
We learned the parts of a spider and watched a short video.

Ask your child to tell you about spiders.  This week we will learn about nocturnal animals.

Everybody Dance Now!

As the weather starts to cool down, we will be spending more time indoors.  To get our kiddos a movin' and a groovin', we will often end our day with a 'Dance Party'.  We  have some old Rock Band guitars and 'the band' will play will everyone else dances.  Sometimes we just dance but we also do some dances together. here are some dances we will be doing together---

*The Hokey Pokey---do a search for Little Richard's version.  Best Hokey Pokey version ever!
*The Chicken Dance
*The Macarena---it's a pattern!
*Who Let the Dogs Out?---we move the chairs out from the tables and the children crawl and bark (this is a lot more fun than it sounds)
*Born to Be Wild---with this classic by Steppenwolf  the children pretend to get on motorcycles, we put on helmets, start our engines (yes, it's loud) and we form a long line and 'ride' until the teacher says, "RED LIGHT" and everyone stops.  "GREEN LIGHT" and we all go.  This is a lot of fun.

There are a lot more songs that we play but you get the idea.  Get up and get moving!  Clear the furniture and have a dance party with your child!

Budding Artists

Our MWF preK students are budding artists.  Our ongoing art unit has our students learning how to draw a portrait, a landscape and a still life.  These pieces of art were taken home last week.  How do we draw? Teachers demonstrate and give directions.  We use directional words like top, bottom, inside, outside, etc.  We use numbers and letters (make the number 11 for the trunk of the tree, put a circle on top of the number 11). Crayons are in freezer zipper bags (the clip kind we learned works best) for ease of finding crayons and quick clean up.
We learned that artists sketch before they paint.  We are going to be learning about Vincent Van Gogh and are sketching sunflowers.  We sketch with a pencil and then color.  We are also learning every time we draw, we get a little better!
We have introduced a lot of new vocabulary to the children---
*primary colors
*secondary colors
*warm colors
*cool colors
*portrait (we will talk about self portraits w/Van Gogh)
*still life

Have some fun sketching with child and watch your budding artist bloom!
