Do You Come from a Land Down Under?

Last week, the  MWF classes did a unit on Australia.  We learned Australia's location, about the equator, talked about the time difference and the Pacific Ocean.  We also did some Aboriginal art.  We did a group project, had some individual projects for the art center and one child did her own interpretation of Aboriginal art.

The group project-

A kangaroo is traced on tagboard for students.   First, students filled in the kangaroo.
Next, we added lines to the edge and outlined the tagboard.
Finally, we filled in with lots and lots of dots!

This year we added an activity.  At the easel in the art center, we had dot markers and markers for the children. We provided large paper with a kangaroo, lizard, sea turtle, dolphin or shark traced on to the paper.

Finally, one student was so inspired she created her own Aboriginal art!

Here's What's Happening at MCP

Our winter bulletin board is now full of kids and snowmen.  Need more bulletin board ideas? Search under the label 'Bulletin Boards' on our blog.
Christmas cards with snowmen make great winter lacing cards.

Dinosaurs are BIG so they need BIG numbers (for our MWF prek classes only). After a teacher checks, children get to press the easy button.  The blue triceratops I found at a dollar store and other dinosaurs are die-cut at the Child Care Connection.

There's more...

Pajama Party Lacing Cards

We love lacing cards at MCP and believe it is an activity the children should be able to take home (not get ripped apart for the next student).  Pancake, waffle and cereal boxes make great lacing cards for our Pajama Party (or bedtime unit).

Need more ideas for lacing for home, school or daycare?

Mommy's Little Monkey

Valentine's Day is about a month away.  Looking for a fun Valentine for your class or child to create?  We made these Valentine's last year for the children to give to their parents.  The year before we made owls which were adorable

The hearts were all pre-cut for the the children to assemble.  We glued the light brown face onto the dark brown head, added the ears, light brown mouth and black eyes.  After the monkey dried, teachers drew on the nostrils and mouth.

We added a label to the back and the children signed their name.

You could probably make this on a smaller scale with fun foam, googly eyes and glue a magnet on the back.  Whatever you choose, have some fun creating Valentine cards with your child!

Snow Day 2014

A little part of me is bummed that we are not back in school today (some of my preschoolers might feel the same but not their older siblings).  I spent last Thursday and Friday getting our room ready for the new year. I rearranged the furniture (prepping for the cereal box fort), set up new centers and we have fun units planned for the month.  This always gets me excited for the students return. school. Oh well,  I am fortunate that I don't have to trek out into the cold today.  I am warm and toasty but how do animals keep warm and toasty in the winter?  Here are some ideas to keep the kiddos busy...

Ice Ice Baby 2014

More ideas---
*Use vocabulary words like liquid, solid and temperature.  Our MWF classes are familiar with these concepts from our liquid/solid science unit.
*Count the ice blocks before you sculpt.
*Measure the sculpture height.
*Estimate how long it will take the bowls to freeze.  Use small and large bowls and ask which do you think will freeze first?  Why?
*Estimate how long the sculpture will last before melting
*Talk about the word 'sculpture' (this is an upcoming unit w/our MWF classes)  How is a sculpture different than a painting or  drawing?
*Search ice sculptures on the Internet and see some amazing images!

Keep warm and watch the news for school closings because of severe temperatures.

ASANTE Children's Choir

The ASANTE African Children's Choir will be performing this Saturday, January 11th at 6:30 p.m. at CUChurch.  The ASANTE concert is opportunity for you and your child to experience the world.  The concert is free and there will be opportunities for offerings and sponsorships.

For the second year, our MWF classes have traveled the world.  The children are introduced to the concepts of continents, countries, states, towns and cities.  We also talk about oceans, how we would travel and that there are children all over the world.  This is a lesson I can't provide in the classroom!
