You'd think that would be enough but there's more---

And Santa's laundry is a fun matching game for our preK students---

My Happy Place

These were the two people who taught me how to lovelaugh and learn.  My childhood home was a happy place and I was a lucky girl.

Since I knew what love was, I found a man to love and we married. We created our own happy place with our two boys.  More love, much laughter and lots of learning (children and parents learning...little did I know my kids would teach me a lot). A little luck and lots of work to create a happy place for our family.

After my home, this door...
leads to my second happy place.  I am so thankful that I have a career where I wake up and head out to a place filled with love, laughter and learning.  I am really good at a what I do. I acknowledge and give thanks for it is a gift.  It is not mine to own but mine to give.

When I close this door, I am able to love and be loved.  I laugh and see laughter.  I am responsible for learning but  I also learn something new everyday.  I am able to forget for a few hours whatever ails me and be happy in this happy place.

Find your happy place.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Will It Go 'Round in Circles?

 Inspiration from Kandinsky's Several Circles!

Students learned that artists will give a name to their work.  After the glue dries on these pieces, our MCP students will be naming their work.

More Kandinsky after the holiday break!

Liquids and Solids 2017

Last week, our MWF preK students did some experiments.  We are learning that liquids do not have a shape and need to be in a container.  We also learned that temperature will change the shape of a solid or liquid.

We put ice cubes in a bowl and predicted what would happen.

The ice melted!  We observed that all the ice had melted.  What will happen if we put the container back into the freezer?  More predictions...

We will be using the words experimentobserve and predict with our preK students as we do more experiments throughout the school year.

What can you do at home?  A's water and containers.  Easy breezy!  Experiment with different containers, sunny windows or place a container with ice outside where it is still cool and a container with ice inside.  Ask your child to predict which will melt faster.  Why?

Liquids and solids also mean ice cream fun for our preK kiddos!  What's your favorite flavor?

Afternoon class
We made ice cream (a quart of heavy cream, a can of sweet condensed milk and fifteen enthusiastic helpers to stir and mix).  It turned into ice cream!

Did your child like the ice cream?

We are finishing up our I SPY bottles with our 3 y/o friends.  Some friends had fun in our art center creating a BIG I SPY.  This is easy enough to do at home with your child.  Cut a variety of pictures in different sizes from magazines, catalogs, calendars or newspaper/mail ads.  Use a poster board or large piece of card board and glue the large pictures first and fill in with smaller pictures.  Have older children?  You can have them cut out the pictures. Have company coming for the holidays?  It's a fun activity to keep little ones busy.

Too Many Toys

Most families realize that they have too many toys. Research is now showing the effect of too many toys on young children.  At MCP, we provide a lot of play with few toys.  Many of these toys and activities are meant to be played with alone or with a friend. We have a closet full of toys and a stuffed attic but most of our 'toys' are put away and rotated throughout the school year.  Because we strongly believe in the power of play and a child's imagination, we have no computers or tablets for the children.  We have no toys that require batteries.  We are powered by your child's imagination.

Some of the benefits seen in fewer toys were increased in attention span and creativity.  We see this everyday at MCP.  Our students will sit at centers to color, work with play dough, put a puzzle together, sift through rice or beans and much more.  Their imagination takes them to far away places in our dramatic play where we hear them use vocabulary introduced in a group lesson.

No screens.  No batteries.  No  daily worksheets.

It works.

Last week our MWF preK  students learned about wheat, flour and breads.  We learned most flour is made from wheat.  Wheat grows in a field.  Flour is used to make many things we like to eat.  We also learned that yeast is the ingredient that makes bread rise.
We learned that children all over the world eat many kinds of bread and not everyone has an oven!
We watched a field of wheat being harvested and 'went' to a factory to see how a loaf of bread is made and much more.  On Fun Food Friday, we tasted tortillas.  Yummy!

We made our own sub sandwich with meats, cheeses and toppings.

This was a delicious and fun filled unit.  Frozen bread dough is an easy way to have some fun with your child in the kitchen.  At the grocery store?  Ask your child what food s/he think will have flour. You and your child can visit your local bakery or the bakery section in your grocery story.  Have your child choose a new bread to try.  Enjoy!
