Winter Olympics---Sochi 2014
Each child in our MWF classes received a gold medal on Friday. The Star Spangled Banner played while each child walked up to the podium (table top) to be awarded their medal in their chosen winter sport. We tallied the numbers for each sport. These charts give us lots of discussion about numbers---greater, less, most, least and equal. We are also introducing the concept of estimating. The charts also help us with letters---what letter sound do you hear in winter? or I will write a letter and ask them to identify the letter.
In the Discovery Center, I brought my Matryoshka dolls (my parents did a trip that included Russia). The children LOVED these nesting dolls. Had I known they were going to be such a hit I would have dug out my Halloween and Christmas nesting dolls! Well, hindsight is always 20/20.
Ask your child about their gold medal and winter sport!

Olympic Art
Our Olympic spirit will carry through all week with our MWF classes. Here's a couple more art projects...
We took a large television box and glued on some construction paper and tissue paper.
Next we painted Olympic circles. We will continue painting through Friday.
We also had Olympic painting on paper. More Olympic art on Friday!
It sounds like the children are really enjoying their first Olympic experience! We will be extinguishing the torch in our room on Friday and awarding gold medals!

I Love My Work
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.

Added boxes to the cereal box fort. All the walls have reached the ceiling! Final count---308
Here is our Olympic bulletin board. Our MWF classes will be keeping track of medals won by Team USA.
Last Friday, our MWF classes made torches, ran through the hallways and 'lit' our room torch.

The Red, White and Blue
We have a lot of TEAM USA spirit flowing through our classroom. Here are some centers we have available for our MWF classes during the Olympics. Remember that centers are a child's personal choice in our classroom so not all children will bring home these projects.
Enjoy the Olympics with your child.
Painting at the easel-choose either white paper or a USA map.
Lace a TEAM USA necklace. The children have to use all three colors and create a pattern, too.
Simple rectangular lacing cards with red & blue laces. After lacing, children can stamp USA and add red and blue stars.
Enjoy the Olympics with your child.

The Olympic Spirit
Our MWF classes are full of the Olympic spirit. We have looked at our maps and globes to see where Sochi, Russia is located, talked about the winter sports, the medals, we are reading Olympic words and simple sentences and creating lots of TEAM USA crafts.
In the art center is a simple stencil to create a US flag.
